Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Eagle-Gryphon Games has been producing games for nearly 20 years. They’re known for some of the best games of all time, including On Mars, Escape Plan, The Gallerist, and the Defenders of the Realm Series. The Eagle-Gryphon team also publishes the Gryphon Bookshelf Series and the EGG series. Eagle-Gryphon Games has now created a Deluxe version of Struggle of Empires, and game designer Martin Wallace was involved in some of the updates. Martin said he fully supports this Deluxe revision of his game.

The project was launched on Kickstarter in August 2019. It was funded in less than eight hours and Eagle Gryphon Games consistently replied to comments and questions from backers. The team shared their objectives for this Kickstarter project, talking about producing the deluxe edition of what they think is an all-time classic design. They noted how they’ve published the original version of the game for the past 15 years and are excited to make the new edition a reality. Near the end of the campaign, Eagle Gryphon announced a Japanese production of Struggle of Empires Deluxe for Japanese backers who want the game in Japanese instead of English. By the end of the campaign, 1,684 backers pledged $120,536 to help bring this project to life.

Struggle of Empires is set in the eighteenth century and is a grand empire building game with easy to learn, straightforward rules. Players get to decide whether to expand in Europe or take control of colonies in the Americas, Africa, and the Far East. The game consists of three major wars, each lasting 5-6 rounds of play. Each war begins with the formation of two alliances and represents approximately two decades. Players perform two actions in each round of play, and at the end of each war will score victory points.

The deluxe version of Struggle of Empires brings a large and re-imagined game board, along with high-quality cardboard components, new wooden components, a larger box with better storage, and new art. The new version also comes with an updated rule book. The updated rules clarify the original rules and examples. It also adds variant rules, two of which were created by Martin Wallace. The team reviewed discussions, comments, and files on and then developed those variants based on players’ personal play preferences.
