Game On: Totemic
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
The Kolossal Games team launched a new project on Kickstarter to end its 2019 season of games. As backers worldwide came together to fund, Kolossal Games continues to add to their excellent line up of tabletop and card games. Known as an industry leader, Kolossal games love to make gameplay accessible to all skill levels with beautiful presentation, bold design, and approachable rules. Kolossal Games has an impeccable reputation on Kickstarter and is known for building a strong community that delivers its projects on time and with the highest quality possible.
Totemic launched on Kickstarter December 2019 and was soon fully funded. Totemic was designed by Kolossal’s lead developer Christopher Hamm, who has designed great games like Strife and Legendary Creatures. The expansion Feather and Fang was the result of stretch goals being unlocked throughout the campaign. The expansion includes extra spirit cards for frog, snake, owl, fox, catfish, and cougar. All cards in the game were upgraded to a linen finish and by the end of the campaign, 866 backers pledged $14,455 to help bring this project to life.
In Totemic, players are animal spirits who vie for their place in nature. Players use the strength and abilities specific to their kind to approach the contest in their unique way. Only the animal that best uses their abilities wins. Totemic can be played with a friend or solo. This is a fast-paced game that allows for strategy and risk and creates a different experience each time.
Each player starts by taking an animal spirit card and their corresponding aspect cards. Players note their starting power points and then shuffle the deck. At each turn, players can take one of three actions: draw, invoke, or challenge. The rounds continue until a player is reduced to 0 power. Only one spirit animal can sit atop the totem in the end.
