Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Firelock Games designs and releases games with innovative rules, historical integrity, and beautiful models. As their third Kickstarter campaign, Oak & Iron stays true to their reputation. Their popular game Blood and Plunder, a historical tabletop game of high stakes buccaneering on the Spanish Main, was a huge hit and they hope to bring that same love and passion to Oak & Iron.

The product launched November 2018 and was fully funded in a few hours. Firelock Games updated backers throughout the campaign, and shared in depth details on each unlocked stretch goal. New reviews were added to the page as game critics received Oak & Iron and loved the game. During the campaign was the 300th anniversary of the notorious pirate Edward “Blackbeard” Teach and Firelock prepared a special stretch goal to commemorate the occasion. “Blackbeard’s Revenge” is an expansion box that was included as a free reward for certain pledges. By the end of the campaign, 1,356 backers pledged $199,592 to help bring this project to life.

Oak & Iron is a 1/600th scale naval game set in the age of piracy and imperial expansion. Players are able to recreate battles between squadrons and small fleets of sailing ships. The game is designed to be true to the theme and tactics of the period. Strategic planning is at the core of this game and actions affect not just the current turn, but future turns as well.

Gameplay is set in four main phases: Initiative, Movement, Attack, and End. At each turn, players choose an initiative card to order issues to the ships under their control. Players then alternate activating their ships for movement and actions. After both players have finished moving their ships, they begin the attack phase. Players alternate attacks against their opposition. Ships have various options for attack and attacks are resolved by rolling dice. During the end phase, each player checks their fleet and reassembles for another round. The game continues until a squadron has more strike points than remaining ships and has to flee the battle, leaving the opposing player as the winner.
