Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Indie Game Studios and Spielworxx are teaming up on over 50 Kickstarter projects with different publishers in the industry. Their latest project is an update from the original Die Macher, designed by Karl-Heinz Schmiel. The game they launched on Kickstarter went through extensive testing and development to ensure the best possible for past and future fans. Die Macher was first released in 1986 and quickly gained a legendary reputation and is regarded as the Grandfather of the ‘heavy eurogame” genre.

The Kickstarter campaign launched in June 2019 and quickly met its funding goal. Indie Game Studios shared the history of the original Die Macher game. Each update, they shared insight into the changes they made to the original game and what backers can expect from this limited edition. There were no stretch goals in this campaign, and by the end, 2,472 backers pledged $158,871 to help make this project a reality.

Players in Die Macher fight for political power in Germany. They organize the election campaigns of one of five German parties in several federal state elections. Players are in charge of national political parties and must manage limited resources to help their party win. The winning part has the most victory points at the end of the game. The game offers four different ways of scoring victory points. First, each regional election can offer points. Second, media influence in the region offers points. Third, the national party membership will supply victory points. Fourth, parties score points based on how closely the party platform matches the national opinions at the end of the game.

The Limited Edition brings improvements from the original author Karl-Heinz Schmeil and the SPielworxx team. Die Macher: Limited Edition advances 2 to 5 players through four German federal state elections and features all new art by Harald Lieske.
