Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Shinobi 7 is a tabletop game company dedicated to producing and publishing high-quality games based on pop culture brands. Their team has worked with top licensed brands like Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, My Little Pony, and more. Their news game with Sonic the Hedgehog brings another beloved character to the table.

The Kickstarter campaign for Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers, launched in February 2018, and Sonic fans worldwide funded the project in a few days. Shinobi 7 shared gameplay videos and giveaways during the campaign. Several goals were unlocked that added new racer and boss profiles, ring stackers, and extra cards to the game. By the end of the campaign, 1,085 backers pledged $138,351 to help bring this project to life.

Sonic The Hedgehog: Battle Racers is a racing board game with pre-painted miniatures where players race past Badniks and Bosses, collecting rings in a sprint to the finish line. Players choose their racer and route and fight their way to the finish while avoiding opposing racers and various dangerous obstacles. Players get to control their speed, use abilities, and activate special powers to collect as many rings as possible. The game also offers Solo Mode, where a player picks the Racer and Boss to play against. The player aims to collect as many points as possible before the race ends. Solo Mode is a great way for players to practice and learn new strategies for the next time their friends join them at the table.

The game comes with five iconic Sonic characters with their racing style and flavor. Each Racer gets a miniature, profile, and speed token, and each profile contains unique abilities and powers. Every track section presents a new set of challenges and can be put together in various ways that make no two races alike. Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Races is designed by Benjamin Yamada, who loves video games and Sonic the Hedgehog.
