Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Robert Burke Games is a small independent publisher of designer board games. He is also passionate about helping others understand Kickstarter and has written several blog posts about Kickstarter analytics and trends, helping others be more successful online. He launched The Silver River in 2019, and it became one of his most popular games released.

Launched March 2019, The Silver River quickly gained popularity. During the campaign, Robert updated backers with design information and asked for input from the community. He also held a photo contest and gave updates on the production. As stretch goals were hit, backers received new cards, upgraded all punchboard tokens, additional cubes, more scoring and trackers, and an additional solo game ruleset.

The Silver River is a full-featured 4X game that only takes two hours to play. It takes place in The Milky Way Galaxy, known in many Eastern cultures as The Silver River. The playable races included are those that many believe exist in our galaxy: humans, Martians, greys, Nordics, reptilians, and insectoids, and each has its different strengths and abilities. The 4X experience includes explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. Players explore a real path to victory and earn rewards for exploring empty sectors. This exploration provides quests that tell stories. Players can expand as much as they want. Battles are not forced, and multiple races can populate the planets. Players can exploit the worlds they colonize and produce resources. Finally, players exterminate their opponents with fast combat or turn their military toward shared enemies.

The addition of space monsters brings a whole new element of play to The Silver River. The monsters are moon-sized or larger and provide a large treasure to players strong enough to defeat them. Players can choose to fight the monsters alone or teach up with other players to battle them. Each space monster includes cards that support three different levels of strength for new play experience each time. The Silver Rivers offers thematic, asymmetrical gameplay that includes all the different options in 4X games but does so in a shorter amount of time.
