Game On: Consumption: Food & Choices
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Consumption: Food and Choices was Kolossal Game’s third project in 2019. Hours went into the design and development of the game to ensure a balanced and enjoyable experience. The game’s designer Karen Knoblaugh crafted the game with a unique theme and perspective. They launched this project in February 2019 and it was funded in less than eight hours. Each day they unlocked new content to add to backers’ free expansion and continued to reach each stretch goal. By the end of the campaign, the project was successfully funded with 693 backers pledging $40,758 to help bring this game to life.
This worker placement and resource management game asks the question: what’s for dinner? Players meet their body’s food needs by making choices throughout the game. The game is designed by a dietitian and presents the food we eat as a balance of health and happiness in a non-judgemental way. This fun and creative game seamlessly addresses how we eat. It offers a component count and strategic game-play with approachable and easy-to-learn rules.
Consumption is played over 6 rounds. Each round consists of three steps: select assistants, take action and prepare for the next round. Each player plays with a particular diet preference to guide their strategy. Over the six rounds, players will try to live their best life through the food they eat and the activities they engage in. Players can shop for ingredients, eat out, complete recipes, and do physical activity. Each round players select from one of six assistance to aid their actions. At the end of the game, players get points for their success and lost points for failing to follow the diet’s preferences.
