Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Sylex has been designing games since 2017. They love publishing smart games with easy rules and great immersion. They bring rigor and passion into colorful universes with rules that are as simple as possible. They work hard to create a depth of mechanisms that offer the control that grows as their games go. Their first project was Dreamscape. Designed and illustrated by David Ausloos, Dreamscape provides a door into a whole new world of gameplay.

Dreamscape launched in March 2018 on Kickstarter and was funded in just under 40 minutes. Throughout the campaign, Sylex updated their backers with new extended stories and scenes. Their bakers unlocked all stretch goals that brought extra trees, sleepers, and dreamers to the game. Mr. Nightmare was added along with a White as Snow expansion with snow dreamcards and snow board. By the end of the campaign, 2,158 backers pledged €120,364 of the €8,000 goal to help make this project a reality.

Dreamscape is a 2-4 player game where players collect dreamshards for a good night’s sleep. This quick game has a deep mechanism that requires players to be smart enough to manage the creation of their dream universe. This game combines route-planning, resource collecting, 3D building, and the use of powers to play.

Dreamscape consists of five rounds. Players start with their Sleeper collecting dreamshards in the Dreamworld. Tokens represent these small essences of dreams for water, land, rocks, grass, or nightmares. With those dream shards, players build many shapes of landscapes. The travel phase allows players to perform up to give actions to collect and move through the Dreamworld. Once collected, shards are put in the player’s Collect Zone, where they’re ready to help. These shards are useful to enter new locations and activate powers on Dreamcards.

The Nightmare Phase begins once moves in Dreamworld are made. Mr. Nightmare moves too, and his presence prevents players from using their powers on specific locations. The creation phase is where players build their Dreamscape. Players make mountains, rivers, and new paths. Dreamers can also grow trees, and players can trade their dream shards for others more useful for them. The game ends with all rounds are completed. Dream purpose goals are scored. The player with the most points wins.
