Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

IION Games is a game design company with one goal: to make awesome games. Founders Billy Miller and Jonny Hinkle have loved playing games their whole lives. Billy appreciates all kinds of games, from video to tabletop and roleplaying. Jonny has an affinity for tabletop games and is a full-time game illustrator, designer, and comic book creator. Their first game The Goblin King is Angry was a success and their goal of creating games people love was met.

The Goblin King is Angry launched on Kickstarter May 2019. Throughout the campaign IION Games shared updates and backstories of different game characters. Their stretch goals released new cards and characters as they were met and added custom meeples. IION regularly checked in with backers and thanked them for their support.  By the end of the campaign, 423 backers pledged over 200% of their goal for a total of $20,625 to help bring this project to life.

The Goblin King is Angry comes from a new perspective: the goblins. For far too long and across countless games, players have seen goblins as an obstacle to overcome on their quest for greatness. Now, the goblins are angry and ready to fight back. Players compete to topple the castle in the center of the gameboard. This is a semi co-op tower attack board game. It’s fast-paced and easy to learn. The art is masterfully done and players will enjoy this cutthroat game of strategy.

There are four main movements players must accomplish to reach victory. First, the Goblin Phase introduces all players to their goblins, and players set up their goblins in however they choose. They can also use stones to purchase more or upgrade their goblins. The Movement Phase is when all players move their goblins next to the castle. Each takes a turn and must avoid hexes already occupied by goblins or castle units. The Castle Phase is a chance for the castle to fight back. Players flip the castle card deck and strategically place them throughout the board where they will do the most damage to their opponents. Finally, the Conflict Phase is when the castle units attack the player’s goblins if they’re in the wrong section of the game board. At the end of this phase, players must see if enough goblins made it close enough to the castle for the castle to be destroyed.
