Delivered: HyperDrive GEN2
“Delivered:” is a series in which we look at crowdfunded ideas that have successfully shipped to their supporters. We dive into the final product, after its long journey from concept to fulfillment.
HyperDrive GEN2 is the next generation of USB-C hubs with twice the speed and twice the power. Since 2015, the design of the USB-C has remained mostly unchanged and most have the same features of the 1st generation with lower power and slower speeds compared to 2020 standards. This next-generation hub offers 2x video refresh speed, 2x USB transfer speed, 3x memory card transfer, and 2x power delivery.
This new USB-C hub is everything you want in an updated version of tech. I didn’t realize how slow my 1st generation hub was until I tried the GEN2. The upload and transfer speed are noticeably faster. I love the choice between the six or 12 ports and the long enough cable that works well with any of my devices. There is also an 18 port model for those with bigger needs than my home computer. The option of ports means there is a GEN2 USB-C hub for every need. I mainly use mine on my tablet and laptop, but my video editing friends love the 18 port features.
The design is minimalist and industrial with a sleek exterior. It’s all metallic with the ridges at the top ⅔ that help with heat dissipation and makes it cool to the touch. All three models can stand vertically or horizontally. The more common ports like memory cards, USB, and audio jacks are found at the front of the hub while the other more permanent connections are in the back so cables aren’t coming out in weird places.
The HyperDrive GEN2 offers 4K60Hz HDMI HDR (vs 4K30Hz HDMI on 1st generation USB-C hubs.) 300MB/s UHS-II MicroSD/SD (vs 104MB/s UHS-I MicroSD/SD.) 10Gb/s USB-A Gen 2 (vs 5Gb/s USB-A Gen 1.) 100W USB-C Power Delivery (vs 60W USB-C Power Delivery.)
