Delivered: A Minimal Pen That Will Last You a Lifetime
“Delivered:” is a series in which we look at crowdfunded ideas that have successfully shipped to their supporters. We dive into the final product, after its long journey from concept to fulfillment.
This minimal pen, designed by Mechanical Engineer Andrew Sanderson and his company Modern Fuel, is a solid metal retractable pen, created for its functionality and esthetic. The custom-engineered mechanism was made using the same durable material as aircraft bearings, so the smooth click of the pen will last for decades. The pen is special because the mechanism is hidden entirely inside the pen creating a continuous, sleek metal outer surface.
It’s clear from the moment I held the pen that it was designed and created differently than any other pen at my desk. The design is sleek and the pen is very heavy. It felt a bit strange at first like I was just holding a piece of metal. Despite the differences, the pen writes smooth and I soon adjusted to the weight and smoothness of it. The top easily screws open when replacement ink is needed. I don’t doubt the claims that this pen would last generations (if I don’t lose it first).
The pen is 100% made in the USA and is 100% metal. It’s unique from other pens in for several reasons. The custom-made mechanism is different because instead of using soft, small plastic pieces, Modern Fuel designed a 1mm steel ball bearing and track. The only downside is that the pen needs to be vertical or nearly vertical to click in and out of place. Each pen is also perfectly balanced from end-to-end. The most notable difference to me is the quality of the metal used. Instead of rolling and stamping, this pen has been machined down from one solid piece of metal. I also appreciate that the pens are compatible with dozens of refill options to make refilling the ink easy.
The pen is 140mm in length and 9.5mm diameter. They range in weight, depending on the metal, from 28g-48g. The pens come in four different metal options: Titanium, Stainless Steel, Copper, and Bronze and each differ slightly. The Titanium pen is as strong as steel, but 45% lighter making for a strong and light option. The Stainless Steel pen is resistant to corrosion and staining and will keep its clean, sleek look. The Copper pen has tellurium added to the soft material to make it stronger. The Bronze pen will develop a “vintage” patina depending on the owner’s environment and lifestyle. There is truly a pen for everyone’s personality and preference.
