Game On: Pedigree: The Animal Breeding Board Game
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
Pedigree: The Animal Breeding Board Game was created by Duane Wulf, a former university professor in Animal Science who has always loved tabletop games and animals. He grew up riding horses. He dreamed of creating a board game for 20 years and was able to start designing games seriously in 2013 with the goal to bring family and friends together around the table to enjoy each other and build relationships without the electronic distractions. Pedigree was a finalist for the 2018 Golden Arbutus Game Design Award and is now a must-have for families around the country.
Pedigree’s Kickstarter campaign launched on November 1, 2018, with a goal of $17,700. The campaign did well and was fully funded by November 18. As stretch goals were reached backers were able to choose which animal specie deck they wanted to be included in their copy of the game. Other stretch goals included linen finish to the box, mats and tokens, upgraded card quality, and thicker tokens. At the end of the campaign 307 backers pledged a total of $28,270.
Players in Pedigree are breeders trying to make the most money by raising the best animals. Success comes from a combination of management, mating decisions and luck of genetics. Players choose the animals based on their appearance, but it can be an imperfect predictor of their DNA. They won’t know the value of their animal until they see the animals’ offspring. There are seven seasons within the game: Planning, Breeding, Gestation, Birthing Step 1, Birthing Step 2, Show, and Market. The game is played over five years with each year consisting of the six seasons. One trophy is awarded each year and when the trophies are gone the game is over and whoever has the most total wealth wins the game.
Action cards allow each player to make decisions like vaccinate, groom, and do genetic testing. Animal cards are where players choose their breeding and pick which animals they will sell. Available species include: Beef Cattle, Suffolk Sheep, Brangus Cattle, Quarter Horses, Labrador Retriever Dogs, Berkshire Pigs, Jersey Cattle, and Southdown Sheep. Players play actions simultaneously with minimal downtime for a fast-paced game. It’s easy to learn and something the whole family will enjoy playing.
The game is based on actual genetic biology and real-life decisions of animal breeding to produce show ring champions and top dollar animals. To learn more about Pedigree and their Kickstarter campaign see the links below.
