Game On: Oom-Pah!
“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.
The Joy Dispensary’s new game Oom-Pah! was created by Australian duo Stace Callaghan and Liv Cosham. While Callaghan had very little knowledge of music theory when they set out to create the game, Cosham had just finished a degree in music, but both had a love of games that they wanted to incorporate into their musical pursuits. They thought this would be the perfect opportunity to find a way to teach music theory in a fun, creative way that beginners and experts alike could enjoy.
Oom-pah! was launched on Kickstarter on November 7, 2019 and by December 10 they had reached more than AU $37,000, 125% of their funding goal. Throughout their campaign, they kept backers updated on their progress and even hosted an Oom-Pah! tournament at a local university with postgraduate students. As they met stretch goals, they rewarded backers with branded stickers and a 50 page score pad to keep track of points.
Oom-Pah! is a fast-paced card game where all players play at once and use their cards to build different chords, intervals, and scales to try to empty their score stack before their opponents. There are key learning tables included in case you are unsure of what cards can be played, but the quicker you memorize them, the quicker you can empty your deck. Once a player has emptied their score stack, they shout “Oom-Pah!”
The game can be played with up to four players, but they’ve also created a one-player mode for individual fun and learning. They’ve also created different decks you can select depending on your individual music theory knowledge, so it’s easy enough for beginners to catch on and still engaging enough for experts.
