“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.”

Mindcloud is a game publishing company based in Budapest, Hungary that specializes in medium- heavy thematic Euro -style games. Their mission is to “create deep, thematic gaming experiences for board game enthusiasts who appreciate rock solid game design with innovative mechanisms, engaging game worlds with detailed artwork and top-notch production value.” Their company likes to create worlds within their games that have a solid backstory and engaging characters.

They launched their project for Trickerion on Kickstarter on June 14, and had an amazing response. Within three hours of their launch time the campaign smashed through  all of their first 3 stretch goals. The team played out their stretch goals and then invited the backers to a game of mystery for the duration of the campaign. Mindcloud posted a new riddle for backers to solve every other day to keep interaction and interest high for their campaign. They gave out clues to select backers who were interested. Their project successfully funded on June 18, four days from their release date with $574,367 for the production of their game.

The storyline behind Trickerion “Dalhgaard the Magnificent entrusted us all with his last will. He wanted us to create an Academy. Reconstructing the old manor is a noble enterprise, but the Academy is not only a building. It is its students and its tutors, those who create a legacy and those who carry it on and make it richer.  Like all esteemed institutes, the Academy will need a leader, but with so many outstanding seniors, who should it be? As agreed by every aspirant, the question will be settled befit to Magicians: with a contest of skill and show. Whoever excels above all others, shall become the first Rector Magnificus of Dahlgaard’s Academy! May you show us wonders we have never seen before!”

In the game players are Victorian-era magicians, they have a team of apprentices and specialists that they can assign with specific tasks using worker placement and simultaneous action selection. They collect magical components, build an assortment of tricks, and prepare magnificent magic shows in the Theatre that they will perform at each round. Performances gain the players money but the object of the game is to gain fame. The Magician with the most fame points will win the game.
