“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Imperius is a product of Kolossal Games. Kolossal Games is a new publisher that was started by Travis Chance. Travis previously worked with Indie Boards & Cards and Action Phase Games and decided to form his own company in 2017. Before starting his game company Travis was a professional drummer. He got into the gaming industry when he blew out his shoulder playing drums and decided that he would explore a career in board gaming which was another one of his interests. The vision of Kolossal Games is to create a memorable experience for families and friends to connect; and to give the designers and artists the means for their creations to shine in a welcoming and collaborative environment.

In spite of being newer to the gaming industry, Kolossal Games has become a favorite among backers. Imperius was launched on Kickstarter March 27, 2018 and was fully funded in an hour. They were also able to blow through their first two stretch goals. During that time they were reigning at the top of the BGG Hotness. They hosted a live play of the game during the campaign so that viewers could watch how the game was played. They were able to successfully raise $62,637 for their game by April 15 which was less than a month from their start date.

The story behind Imperius is that the Empress has died, and minor houses vie for control, players choose the faction that they will use to try to gain power. With the death of the bloodline civil war commences.  Players draft from every faction and try to outwit their enemies to control the known universe. They work to dominate an array of planets and assign forces. Players choose between the houses of  Ashnon, Drakkai, Quell, or Zathmir.

The game is filled with very thematic and beautiful artwork. There is a lot of strategy in the game and a lot of different paths to victory. It can be played over and over again and have a different outcome each time.  When a house has earned 20 victory points it triggers the end of the game. The house with the most victory points at the end takes the Crown Imperius and rules over the universe.
