“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Kami-sama was designed by AJ Lambeth, the production assistant at Kollosal Games. AJ started into the gaming hobby when he pulled Arkam Horror off of the shelf to play with his friends after a Magic the Gathering tournament. He ended up bringing home a copy of the game. Kami-sama is one of the games that they launched within their first year as a gaming company. They reached out to Kickstarter as a well known place to launch games and they were met with “Kollosal” success.

Kami-sama launched on February 20, 2018 and was funded within 24 hours. They were able to reach 32k overnight and unlock their The Awakened expansion. The following stretch goals were designed to build up the expansion. They did a play through of the game on Board Game Geek in order to spark interest in their kickstarter campaign for the game. As more money was raised through the campaign they were able to add more Kami personalities for players to choose from. By March 11, 2018 they has successfully raised $94,039 in support of their game with 1,574 backers.

Kami-sama is a beautiful and intuitive strategy game set in rural Japan during the Edo period. Two to four players assume the roles of Kami, the spirits of the land. Using a combination of assymetrial player powers, area control , set collection, pattern building, and light card drafting, players will work to balance their Favor with the people and their connection to Nature in order to be crowned Kami-sama, the chief deity of the land”

A board comes with the game that is set up in four different parts that represent different villages. Each village has it's own niche. There is the farming village, holy village, fishing village, and wealthy village. Players will choose a specific Kami that they want to play as and will receive village meeples tat they can use through the game. Each of the Kamis come with specific abilities and gift that they can use to help further them in the game. There are spaces in the game that you can put your meeples on and each space will give you a different benefit.
