“Delivered:” is a series in which we look at crowdfunded ideas that have successfully shipped to their supporters. We dive into the final product, after its long journey from concept to fulfillment

SonarPen has created a smart pen that is both functional and affordable, costing only as much as five cups of coffee. The SonarPen is a writing tool to be used with an ipad, iphone, or android that makes it possible to draw, doodle, do calligraphy, digital painting, or urban sketching on the iPad. The SonarPen allows me to create original works of art just as if I were writing on a piece of paper.

The SonarPen connects to my iPad via the earphone jack by a cord. It looks like a pen and when pressed onto the screen by the tip, will write just like a pen as well. The “ink” from the smart pen always appears directly below the tip while drawing other than slightly below. This makes it very similar to using a regular pen. It responds quickly to my movements and writes very smoothly.

The SonarPen has all of the same feature that a smart pen has including palm rejection, shortcut button, and pressure sensitivity, but is much less expensive than other smart pens. Many of those pens use a battery and within a year or two they stop working because the battery can no longer hold it’s charge. The SonarPen is battery free so that I’ll never have to discard it. There is a magnetic clip that conveniently holds it to the iPad. The clip is connected to your iPad via a double sided tape.

The SonarPen comes in colors pink, yellow, black, red, lime, hot pink, blue, green, purple, and white. It is meant to be used with apps. It is currently supported by the apps Zenbrush, Zoomnotes, Goodnotes, Ibis Paint, and there are a number of others that are currently reviewing the SonarPen to be able to connect it with their apps.
