“Game On” is a series in which we examine the companies, creators, and games in crowdfunding. We look at the journey, ideas, and concepts the creators wanted to bring to market with their product.

Wander: "The Cult of Barnacle Bay” was created by Panda Cult Games who is known for their miniature line. After much prodding from their supporters they decided to create a game that would be centered around their miniatures. The Panda Cult team worked on “Wander: “The Cult of Barnacle Bay” for well over a year and a half. They really wanted to create a fun world full of their animal heroes that was adventurous. In the game, players are able to choose their own adventure. Each of the games that are played will be entirely unique with characters and situations that change and develop over time.

Wander: "The Cult of Barnacle Bay” was released on September 5th on Kickstarter and had a warm welcome. They were able to raise almost all of the money for their campaign goal within the first 24 hours. With the campaign, Panda Cult Games rereleased a Founder’s pack which included pewter miniatures of the characters that are found in their game. Originally these models were released for hobbyists and were meant to be higher quality alternates for other game pieces. In their campaign they were also able to showcase the work of Elizabeth Beckley known as the Miniature Mistress, on their original models.  With the rest of their stretch goals the team was able to release some new characters into the game that included the Krex, Liz the Mouse, and Chauk, and more- all within the first 48 hours. The release of “Wander: The Cult of Barnacle Bay” reached such great success that the company was able to go on to offer t shirts, art, and sculpts, and an add on pack called high tide.

The storyline behind “The Cult of Barnacle Bay” is that evil is lurking in the once peaceful fishing village when Elder Bane takes over the town with his followers. Elder Bane has used his dark magic to transform the town into half animal half aquatic creatures. It is now up to the five heroes  from the Wander to take out Elder Bane and save the village from his crazy curse. Roland the Red, Panda Warrior, Kira the Squirrel Thief, Tank the Turtle Guardian, Fynn the Wolf Ranger, and Ibexus the Goat Wizard. Each of the Animal characters has unique abilities that help their role in the game. And allows a different experience based on the abilities that have been chosen.

Wander: “The Cult of Barnacle Bay” has a unique system that randomizes the turn order of the players. Making each encounter a different experience. Some of the players based on their role, will encounter the dark magic tiles. If they defeat the dark magic they will have the opportunity to gain treasure or trigger special events.  The heroes roles are to fight the foes above and below the ground. Ground tiles flip to expose bad guys that are lurking under the ground. characters are able to develop as they defeat more foes. As the characters gain more experience, new abilities are unlocked on their cards. In turn as the heroes gain experience, the more foes that they will have to fight. The game becomes more and more challenging until the heroes are confronted with their final task of defeating Elder Bane.
